“If I am to be quite honest, I may have said, “why me” when I read this chapter and realized I would be giving my reflection. It is quiet intimidating and well, frankly, one of those chapters that I would just love to “by pass” as I continue my reading. BUT I also know the other side of that. This book, the Bible, is a book written to us, for us all about the glory of our God. Who He is. How He loves us and if I am to skip the challenging parts then, to me, I feel like I am saying, “eh this part of you is just too hard to understand and read so I’m going to just forget about it.” But as I continue to read, the biggest take away from this chapter is that God is a loving God but also that our choices have consequences. We are not perfect people. God knows that, which is why Jesus paid the ultimate price so that you and I are forgiven for our sins. And even though God wants a relationship with each of us, as a parent should, there is discipline and consequence for our actions. God is concerned with far more than our individual acts of sin. He demands that our sin nature be addressed and it is only through Jesus that our sin nature be brought to death and we become a new creation. As I read, I don’t want to become so focused on how society (and myself) would view an act such that is described in Numbers 5, but instead, in what the act represented. Bottom line, this was a ceremony meant to resolve things. I read in a commentary that “You can’t be a Promised Land person if your relationship with others stink! You must make restitution and get things resolved.” Luckily, because of Jesus, these acts are not how we resolve issues today, but what God shows us is that in order to experience the best we have to seek forgiveness from each other and understand that God is a loving God who teaches and disciplines just like a loving father should.” Today’s TXT Time post is by our Preschool Coordinator, Kristen Rhodes. “Numbers 4 is titled “Duty of the Kohathites.” The very first thought that came to my mind was “what is my duty in the church today?” The chapter starts with God speaking to Moses again. I’m kinda jealous. I’m kinda afraid. Moses spent a lot of time talking to God….and God kept the conversation going. I wonder if God spoke to me if I’d be as obedient? After all, its easy to read this and miss the point that God: the Creator of the world and all that is in it is speaking to a man. Speaking life and details. Details that matter. There is a time and a season that God has appointed for each of us. A task, a position, a purpose. If the things of the world or the busyness of it distract us, we’ll miss out on the greatest season of our life! And while it may not cost us our life, like the guys in Numbers 4, if we do it wrong, it may cost someone else their eternity? I’ve always wondered about Jonah’s walk up to Ninevah after he ran from God. After he was swallowed by the large fish, spent 3 days in its stomach, and begged for Gods forgiveness, he spent some time walking and thinking about his delay. How many freshly dug graves did he pass? How many people died without having a chance to repent of their wrong doings? He missed his season. We all have a part to play in the local church. “The book of Numbers is an overarching proclamation of the faithfulness of God. We continue in the story of Israel as they are on the brink of the promised land. I don’t know about you, but I am constantly reminded of how inconsistent and futile I can be with my faith as I read the story of Israel. I see so many qualities of myself in their story. But, in their story I am also reminded of the provision of the Lord. Even in unfaithful times of my life, God still provides and God still is faithful. Praise Him. In Numbers 1 we catch up with Moses and Israelites in the Desert of Sinai. Significant for the fact to show that they are still not in the promised land. This chapter then goes on to lay out an assignment from God to Moses. To count men older than twenty years old who can serve in an army according to their divisions. What I often forget is that there were hundreds of thousands of men! As a musician I can only count to 4… 6 on a good day. (Music Nerd Joke) But, I can only imagine what Moses and Aaron were thinking as they were given this crazy assignment to count thousand upon thousands of men from different tribes. I doubt that they just casually accepted this assignment. The cool thing about this though is that after they were given this massive assignment from God, God then shows them that he has provided help in this task. Isn’t just like God to call you to something while also providing you with everything you need to accomplish that task? Although I do wish God was as clear with me as He was with Moses. From there we start reading about the tribes of Israel that have 40,000 and 70,000 and 50,000 men able to be in battle. The total number of men was 603,550 men! Again, isn’t like God to provide everything you need right there. What a proclamation of a faithful God. My biggest take away from this is that God is faithful to not only call us to work and build the kingdom, but also to provide everything we need. I often times with call God unfaithful when I don’t do the work He has called me to do out of my own selfishness. In all reality it was I that was unfaithful… and God has never even called me to count 603,550 men! What a heart check. Friend, God is faithful, He has provided, and He is calling you to build the kingdom. Let us take that calling and run with it full force because He will bless the preparation. “I have to be honest, reading chapter 26 was overwhelming to me. It is a collection of blessings for those who keep the laws, and curses on those who don’t. Some of these verses in this chapter can seem to not make any sense to us today, and we can assume that because they don’t make sense that we don’t need to apply them to our lives. But, verse 1 became all too familiar to me. “‘Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.” Leviticus 26:1 At first I read this and quickly thought I was off the hook, but then God challenged me to look up the definition of an idol. Idol - an image or representation of a god used as an object of worship. a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered. I quickly realized how many idols I have in my own life. Sometimes when I read the Old Testament I can feel like it doesn’t apply to me, but when in reality it does. Just because I am not physically worshipping another god, doesn’t mean that I don’t have idols. I stopped and took time to think about all of the things that take away from my focus of Jesus, and became overwhelmed. Everyday we are bombarded with idolatry, and I realized that anything that I am putting before God is an idol. We have to ask ourselves, what is our most prized possession? Would we be willing to give it up if Jesus asked us to? If the answer is no, then that possession has taken place of God in our hearts and become an idol. Old Testament believers often fell into the sin of idolatry, and things have not changed since then. Our idols may look completely different, but they are idols just the same. Today, I challenge each and every one of us to take a step back and ask God to reveal an idol in our lives. What would it look like if we were more intentional to put God before all of the things that are such a distraction to us?” Today’s TXT Time post is by our Creative Assistant, Abby Buben.
